Chapter 1: Nostalgia as paint water

He realised, none of the channels really interested him anymore. Not when Marble isn‘t around to watch together. Flicking through various new shows and cartoon episodes and yet nothing stuck. Before he knew it, Wren was back to scrolling on his phone, refreshing the page, fixated on Marble‘s latest post from a few days ago. The warm smiles, excited fans, luxurious venues, all of which Wren knows he can’t be part of. This wasn‘t just jealousy. Or at least he hoped and often reminded himself it wasn’t.The TV running in the background flickered for a brief moment before showing an old pre-recorded episode of Marble‘s earlier game shows. ‘Stage Caterpillar’, that was the title. Wren had kept a copy, of course he did, he wouldn‘t be Marble’s best friend if he didn‘t. That one in particular was one of the more educational ones, informing the audience of transformation in the world through a series of fun activities and questions. Wren had always enjoyed that one, often rewatching in spare time. A soft smile spread across his face as he looked up, hearing the claps and cheers, though that momentary bliss was quickly replaced by a hollowing sorrow. That longing. He felt like he was drowning in nostalgia. Then the soft knocking on the door, which Wren hadn‘t noticed previously, turned into banging. Startled, he quickly rushes over and creaks open the door, only to find a masked figure.“You know, you should really install some doorbells. Been out here for ages!” The person joked playfully.“Right, I should. Sorry for keeping you waiting.” Wren muttered, though he didn‘t even seem to recognise who this was. That can’t be Marble, and of course it‘s not his brother either. He was just about to ask who this was but caught himself first. The two exchange glances, standing in a bit of silence. The mask, which Wren only noticed was digital after a double take, now showed an amused expression.Soft chuckling at first then the person clutched themself in a fit of laughter. “Pfft, you don’t recognise me! I can see it from your eyes!“Being caught like this got Wren tensing up as he shook his head, but what was he supposed to say? Desperately he tried to dig through his memories for anyone that could be this mysterious figure. “Uhm, of course I know it‘s you, Dart!”Dart, or whoever this was, stood silently. Wren‘s heart dropped, did he get it wrong? He probably got it wrong! Why can‘t he even do something so simple! Why must he lie about such a small thing?“Ding ding ding! You’re a prize winner! You got it right!” Dart‘s mask switched over to a cheery look. “I don‘t blame you, I mean this is our first face-to-face meetup anyway. You‘re probably too used to me being an avatar with a disembodied voice.“Wren let out a sigh of relief as he felt the weight lifted, that was a real close one. Dart places his hand on his chin, the eyes on his mask looking up at Wren in curiosity as if to ask him what he has planned for today.“I guess we could get to know each other? I don‘t really have many ideas for the day actually.” Wren responded. “Been a bit too lazy to really get on with anything.“Dart gently places a hand on his shoulder. ”Don’t call yourself that, you‘re not lazy at all. The only way you’ll be lazy is if you believe that you are! We all have our dreary days, now come on, we should probably head back indoors, it looks like a storm is coming soon! You don’t want us to be soaked do you?”“What if I do?” Wren laughed, Dart gave him a small nudge with his elbow and laughed along too before promptly heading into the living room. The television was still turned on, Wren had forgotten he had the show on it until Dart pointed out about Marble. “Are you a fan of his? Marble Meadows, that’s his name correct? I don’t really catch up on celeb stuff so I may get some things incorrect.”Wren simply nodded as Dart continued. “I personally don’t have much time to be a major fan of a celebrity or anyone in particular…” Dart sat down on the couch, seemingly already making himself home and patting the spot beside him. “Do tell me more about it! Y’know, like what’s most interesting about these shows, how’s being a fan like, I’m just always curious to learn more about new friends!”At that moment, Wren's eyes looked like they lit up. Sitting next to Dart he felt incredibly excited all of a sudden, most others don’t even bother inquiring and asking follow up questions. But Dart? He’s different it seems!“Well Marble and I go quite some time back! We’re actually childhood friends believe it or not! So it’s somewhat of a fan thing but also a friend supporting each other's situation!” Wren was smiling simply from the thought of it. Dart nods returning smiles on the mask display.Wren continued on, rambling all about Marble. Their childhood memories, embarrassing yet funny moments, the day that marked their now fading friendship. Dart would occasionally chime in, commenting and offering sympathy for Wren’s situation.“And then he told me how I shouldn't put too many ingredients in the blender, I really should’ve listened, haha—“ He then paused.
He was saying too much.
He’s probably annoying Dart.
Dart didn’t even get a chance to share.
He was being overbearing and giving too much information.
What a selfish friend.
And so Wren went silent before grabbing the remote and turning off the television.Dart noticed this immediately. “What’s wrong, man?”Wren shook his head. “Nothing much.”“You can speak to me about it. I’m not here to judge.” Dart would respond, followed with a sincere smile, as sincere as a digital smile gets.Wren placed his hands over his face, hesitating for a moment before finally admitting.“You’re not annoying me. If anything, I enjoy hearing you speak about your memories, and it makes me feel incredibly glad you feel safe enough to tell me all about it!” Dart would give Wren a pat on the back, an act of reassurance Wren assumed, but he still flinched. “If it helps I can ramble about myself instead to balance it!”Wren still doubted it, people don’t usually admit even when he annoys them. So Dart could be just trying to keep the peace. But he decided not to get too caught up on it and just nodded, signaling to Dart that he can start.“Unlike your life, mine’s been a bit boring, mainly online games, bypassing restrictions, chatrooms, all that good stuff.” Dart let out a dry chuckle. “Well technically I have other lore but you gotta unlock that through future interactions! Hehe! But I can tell you about that one time I confused a player into thinking I was secretly their dad through voice changers!”That was the first time Wren had heard someone refer to their past experiences as lore. But he didn’t bother questioning it and just nodded along.Dart‘s ramble took some time, and honestly? Wren found himself zoning out occasionally. He was half listening, half feeling bad for not fully listening. His mind kept wandering back to Marble. If only they could all hang out together.“So I asked them to name all the types of transol cells or go to sleep immediately. It was a trick question, there’s only one type! At least currently discovered. But guess what, that kid actually started listing a bunch of randomly generated names. It was honestly hilarious.” Dart giggled while recalling that night.“Not gonna lie, you’re kinda like Marble if he was more chaotic! And I love it!” Wren would joke only to immediately backtrack. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to compare you. I know some people don’t like it…”Dart’s mask would power off for a second, completely void of expression. Only for Dart to fumble with it, revealing a neutral expression again.“No, it’s all fine and good! You don’t have to apologise or offer sympathy. I get comparisons often and I don’t really mind.” He continued, “Though I would disagree with your specific observation. I’m much different and simply more than just chaotic Marble! But I guess that’s your first impression of me. Nothing wrong with it.”Wren turned away from Dart, feeling a bit embarrassed. This was his hang out day with Dart and here he was talking about Marble nonstop.Dart was rummaging for something in his pocket before pulling out a small piece of folded paper. “Oh yeah, I was hoping to invite you over to this party that’s going on. Here’s the details but, the guy hosting it is my friend.”“I don’t usually go to parties, but thanks for the offer…”“It’s an opportunity to get to know more friends! Plus more bonding time between us and all. And also to take your mind off missing Marble all the time.” A smirk flickered on. “Could also be networking if you’re interested in a job. Like you can show people your art or something!”Wren would take a closer look at the poster, surprisingly it seemed like a fun event. Maybe he did need a small break from huddling in his room all the time.“I’ll go just for you, okay?” A half truth.“Yeah man! Just actually remember the day alright, don’t forget to show up…”“Of course, of course.”“On that note, I gotta head off y’know? See you at the party then! Super excited to see what you’d wear.” With that, Dart placed the poster into Wren’s hands and got up to leave.Wren would wave him a bye, after the door clicked into place, Wren was back to being alone, clutching the poster in hand. What was he supposed to make of that interaction? Felt like more of a rollercoaster than it needed to be, but things were overall positive, unless Dart secretly hated him. But that could just be insecurities speaking, he hopes. An urging question gnawed at him though. Why was Dart wearing that mask? What’s actually behind all that? He would’ve asked earlier but decided against it. It was their first time meeting up like this after all. Maybe he just wants to look cool? Or was this about his past he was hinting to? He shouldn’t even be so nosey. With a blink of an eye, evening came. Sat at the dining table, Catey was already munching on chicken joyfully, Wren found himself scooping up the mashed potatoes looking at it with a bit of hesitance.“Can we get pancakes next time?”“You had that for breakfast.” Aren, his brother, would reply.Wren murmured something under his breath only for Aren to speak again. “Anything in particular happened today?”“Not much. But I did get an invite to a party in 3 days.”“Huh, didn’t expect that. From the looks of it, you’re going? Where will it take place?”“At the Vines Chattery or something, if I remember correctly.”“No illegal activities going on, correct?”“Of course? What kind of question is that!”“Just making sure. Who’s hosting?” Aren continued to question.Wren pulls out the poster and slides it across the table to Aren. Catey was now eyeing the both with a look of curiosity. “Just take a look at it yourself. I’ll be fine, Aren. Don’t have to interrogate me.”Aren would adjust his tinted glasses as he examined the poster carefully, turning it around to find a familiar name to be the one behind the event. Victor Trent. He takes a deep sigh and looks up at Wren, disappointment etched onto his face. He’s probably thinking about how Wren is wasting away his life yet again instead of doing anything productive. Wren lowers his head. It’s like Aren’s allergic to the concept of fun.“I’m just going to clean the dishes.” Aren mutters, setting the poster down as Catey hands her finished plate to him. Wren still hadn’t finished but it was pretty obvious Aren wasn’t going to be washing for him today.

Chapter 2: Stained Image
The rest of the days felt like they simply flew by, counting down till the event would start. This was one of the few events Wren actually looked forward to, was it just curiosity or perhaps Dart had actually convinced him?The warmth of the sunlight shone through the window, Wren was up early for once, Catey even got to chat with him before leaving for school. As the hours slipped past, Wren doodled on and on, something that surprised even him. It was as if he’d hit that sweet spot of energy, he felt unstoppable. Before he knew it, he seemed to have lost track of time. Wren only then realised he hadn’t even come up with an outfit to wear over to the occasion! Was he really going to head over there dressed in just his average fit? He didn’t want to necessarily stand out, but that bland casual fit was not going to do him any justice.
And what if Dart judges?
He wouldn’t want to give off the impression of being a loser, would he?Rushing back to the closet he swung open the door. Nothing really interesting, but there wasn’t much time left to venture down to the shops. Grabbing a few options and laying them on his bed before pacing around the room, considering his final decision.
This wasn’t even some huge life changing scenario, why was he making such a big deal of what he’s dressed like?
But then again, he doesn’t want to be basic, he doesn’t want to be overcompensating and he doesn’t want to be seen as too weird for sure!He grabs a gradient jacket he had barely worn ever since buying, a simple tee and a comfy pair of pants before heading out. Jogging all the way before finally arriving at the designated venue, people were already entering and yet Wren felt too nervous to dare head in by himself, and so he hung around outside awaiting for the right moment. He probably shouldn’t have brought his multiple sketchbooks and coloured markers to this. While lost in thought he could hear music closing in on him, only to get tapped on the shoulder. Wren jumped and turned to him, Dart had somehow found him, the music was coming from his mask.“Oops! Didn’t mean to startle you. I really thought you’d be in there by now.”“I wanted to wait for you first.” Wren murmured.“Oh! That’s so considerate of you, thanks!” Dart would tilt his head as he noticed Wren’s sketchbooks in hand. “These are neat, are you going to share what’s inside with me?”Wren hesitated. “Maybe later.”Dart just chuckled. “Right, that’s fine. Come on, let’s go in now.”He’d place a hand on Wren’s shoulder as the two would make their way indoors. Wren noticed Dart was wearing the same jacket from their first meeting, was Wren trying too hard? He hoped Dart would mention something about his outfit, yet he didn’t want him to notice at the same time. He seemed to notice Wren’s little glances back and forth between him and the venue. As they walked past groups, someone would wave at and call out to them.“Does that person know us?” Wren would turn to Dart.Dart chuckled slightly “That’s Victor, he’s the one hosting. We’re friends, sorta.”The person would approach Wren instead, almost completely ignoring Dart which made Dart roll his eyes in response. “Well hey there, lovely seeing you today! You must be Aren’s twin, correct?”Wren mumbled a yes in response, he did not like being referred to that and just that. But of course, that’s what most people say when they first meet him, so it wasn’t anything new.“I assumed so, after all your names are quite similar. Almost shocked me thinking he showed up to my event so suddenly.”“I assume it’s a bit disappointing to find out.”“What? No!” Victor immediately shook his head, “I’m incredibly pleased to have you here instead, Wren!” He was probably just lying, to make Wren feel better about all this. It wasn’t working but at least he tried.“I’m Victor Trent by the way, one of the official main event organisers for Vileriland. I do planning and scheduling but also do have a hand in designing posters! Such as the ones that Dart likely handed out to you!”How did he even know that Dart gave Wren that poster? Did Dart tell him? Maybe they’re just very close friends. That or, Victor knows more than he leads on.“Oh and Wren, I heard you were an artist too! Dart’s told me all about you.” Victor would continue. “I also have wonderful news! Firstly, we are currently in need of more artists for event promo and secondly, exhibition or artist events can be potentially held for you to showcase your artwork and comics. All you gotta do is get in touch, send your portfolio and we can organise something for you depending.”Wren stood there, kind of in awe and shock. Dart wasn’t lying about opportunities or networking, he just didn’t expect it to come so easily. “Thanks, I’ll consider it.”He could feel a tug on his arm, he had almost forgotten about Dart until that. “Psst, come on. Wanna take a look at the drinks over there?”Wren looked between Victor and Dart. “We can talk about that some other time, big thanks though!” He mentioned before walking in off, seemingly clueless that Victor had just tried to hand him a business card. Wren unknowingly declined.Taking a seat on the high chairs, Wren would stare at the menu that had been handed to him. It was quite hard to read underneath the ever shifting coloured lighting. Dart however seemed to have no issue with it, his mask displaying what was reminiscent of a thinking emoticon. He was hoping that there was something sweet and warm. Like a candy coated dream wrapped in a beverage. Something he used to love as a child. Perhaps he was just thinking of hot chocolate with marshmallows.“Alright, got the perfect drink!” Dart would raise his hand immediately as the bartender would take his order. “One tropical trip soda please! Galax-sick edition, 15% to be specific, and my friend over here will get a…” He turns to Wren waiting for his response.“Um…” Being put on the spot like this he couldn‘t think properly. He really wished Dart had asked and made sure he was ready before jumping to order! “I’ll have the same as him.” He spat outThe bartender takes a nod before searching for the soda the two ordered. Wren couldn‘t help but feel so embarrassed. Would Dart mind that he copied him?“Wow, you cave into peer pressure real quick.” He’d joke as he looked over at Wren again. “But I have to admit, this style looks pretty nice on you! The gradient jacket is very fitting.”Wren just chuckles. “Thanks and I guess I do sometimes. ”“Don‘t we all?”The bartender returns with two glasses of soda. ”We couldn’t really get the 15% but we did get the 10% one. Hope it‘ll suffice."”That’s all fine.” Dart nodded and immediately paid for both of them.“Dart you don’t have to—”“Treat it like my gift to our lil friendship!”Wren could barely hear him over all the music and cheering from the other tables, so he just laughed. They would clink their glasses together, Dart then gesturing for Wren to try his first. He lifted it up before taking a few sips. He really was proving Dart‘s comment about peer pressure right huh… It tasted fine, initially. He couldn’t help but cough slightly, it was like the soda fizz itself was attacking him, and the lingering aftertaste of artificial space berries? Well if those ever existed, this would exactly encapsulate the taste.“It‘s not for everyone, I know.” Dart would comment. He was clearly analysing Wren’s reaction to it. “Do you feel anything different or are you all good?”“Anything different? What am I supposed to feel? Ominous much.” Wren would remark, slightly humoured yet annoyed by Dart’s words. “It‘s not THAT bad.”Dart just chuckled before downing a bunch of his in one go. “Was just playing with you. Your face just looked contorted from disgust. My bad if I went too far, my guy.“Wren rolled his eyes as he continued taking teensy sips. He couldn‘t help but wonder how the colour of the soda was this vibrant, almost looking like it was glowing. Weird but not surprising that Dart likes this stuff. As he sat there, he couldn’t help but pick up on all the conversations going on. The excited screams, various music coming from different speakers all around the place, cheers every time someone scored in minigames and it was all too much for Wren to bear. He tried to finish the glass, quickening with each sip as his hands began to shake. The world was beginning to feel all too overwhelming, like it was closing in on him, choking him from the inside and out.“Um, Wren?” Dart was eyeing him the whole time. “You wanna go somewhere private instead, they have little chill rooms here.”Wren looked at Dart, did he really just ask that? As much as he would hate to admit it, he felt his cheeks heat up.Was Dart really…
Did he really fancy him that way?
This quickly? Wren wasn’t to judge but, was Wren even ready?
They did know each other for quite some time online but, this would be the first time.
It was just like all the fan stories he saw online, a party of sorts, a night with friends, a private room and…He covered his mouth in absolute embarrassment, looking away as his mind began to circle with thoughts.Dart meanwhile, his mask switched to a suspicious questioning expression, a hint of disgust. “You good?”“Um yeah! I mean uh—““I think you misunderstood, man. I just saw you were uncomfortable here, probably because it’s quite loud so I thought a separate room would probably help in terms of noise level and crowds. Didn’t know you were like that.”“Oh, I’m so deeply sorry I didn’t mean to, I just thought that you meant— I’m so sorry!” Wren really screwed up. How could he misinterpret such a simple suggestion? What a stupid mistake. Now Dart probably thinks he’s some weird creep, rushing things and making Dart uncomfortable. He really did mess it up real bad, didn’t he?Dart’s mask dimmed slightly. “It’s okay. That was just uncomfortable. I accept your apology.”He wanted to show Dart he was genuinely sorry, he didn’t mean to interpret it that way! He didn’t know why he did. The context was right there! How could he have missed that! Cussing in his mind, frustrated with why he was always stumbling over things like this. Why can’t he just be some normal guy for once! All because he read those internet stories. All because he thought that applies to real life.
Great work Wren, now Dart will never see you the same again!“It’s okay, Wren. Seriously, I’m not mad, just a bit shocked you’d think that. I forgive you, okay? Don’t beat yourself up over it.” Dart’s mask, now a neutral expression.Wren nods slightly still feeling that shame building up inside him.He felt a buzz coming from his pocket, taking the phone out to check. Marble had posted something new, a comparison group photo of Marble’s old classmates back as kids as opposed to now. Wren would like the post, leaving a comment while Dart took a peek from his shoulder.“Wren, I think I’m going to head out. The party is getting a bit too much for my liking.”“Mhm, me too. I might go soon.” Wren replies. “I kinda wish Marble was here too, not gonna lie.”That’s when they were approached again, by none other than Victor Trent.
Chapter 3: Soaked Page
Victor would approach them, concern etched on his face. Was he watching this whole time? Did he just happen to know? The timing was almost uncanny.“Is something the matter?” Victor would eye the two of them, looking almost worried.“We’re just about to leave. Wren’s been feeling a bit unwell.” Dart would then gesture for Wren to follow him out the venue.Though Wren hesitated to follow Dart, only to instead open up to Victor, “Nothing much, just genuinely wished that Marble could come along to this party. It’s just missing him, like his absence gnaws at me. Just wish we could hang out again, like we used to.”“Fan of Marble Meadows?” Victor questioned“Yes him, I’m both a fan and childhood friend.”Dart stood beside Wren and Victor, looking back and forth between the two. Irritation was beginning to brew.“Oh right, now that I think of it, Marble has mentioned you a couple times?”“What’d he say?”“Nothing specific. Just about how the two of you used to be close friends and wondering what you’re up to.”“He misses me?”“Well, I assume so.”Wren couldn’t help but look at Victor with wide eyes. This was reassuring. And here he was thinking that Marble didn’t even care to remember him.Victor would look over a small digital notepad, scrolling through it. “I mean I could always double check Marble’s schedule or at the very least notify Marble. And the two of you could find a time to hangout when he’s free. He probably wouldn’t mind.”“Really? You’re willing to do that for me?” Wren was lively once more, ecstatic from the thought of it.“It’s a simple task for me. I wouldn’t mind helping out a friend of Dart’s. Assuming the two of you are friends.”Wren nods with certainty, though Dart, still standing around, had his head lowered. “Wren, let’s go. I’m not feeling great.”Wren just glances back at Dart. “Aww, you can go back first if you want! No need to wait for me y’know?”Dart hesitates. His mask clearly displays a frown.“So, what’d you say? Would you be up for it? I just need confirmation from you before I actually communicate your request to Marble. He is a busy man y’know and I wouldn’t want to bother him unless you are certain.” Victor would continue on. He seemed to have sensed Dart’s distress too, briefly glancing up from the notepad to look at him for a second.“100% certain! Thank you so much Mr. Trent!” Wren would grin as he held his hand out for Victor to shake. For a brief moment, Victor narrowed his eyes, as if calculating how to approach the next words. “No need to call me that. Just Victor is fine. Not used to being so formally addressed by…”“By?”“By people outside of my job. But it’s whatever. Call me Mr. Trent if you want, I just find it weird.”“No, I won’t call you that if you don’t like it. I want you and everyone to feel comfortable around me.” Wren would mutter. “You’re a friend to me too now. If you want to be, that is.”Victor paused, questions circling his head. Dart would then chime in. “Wow you sure bond with strangers quickly.”“Yeah I do! Well I do, sometimes only.” Wren would chuckle a bit awkwardly as he smiled.Dart was already slowly inching away from Wren and Victor at this point.“So here. My business card, again. It has my contacts if you need it, I’ll update you when necessary but if all goes as planned. You should get a message from Marble or myself regarding the meetup, so keep an eye on your phone.” Victor smiled as he handed the card to Wren yet again.“Wait again?”“You didn’t take it earlier.”“Oh! I’m so very sorry I didn’t notice that! I was heading over to the bar with Dart—““Yeah I know.”“Wait, where’d Dart go?” Wren finally spun around trying to spot where Dart went off to.It took a bit of searching around the crowded space only to finally catch a glimpse of Dart walking off to one of the private rooms. And before Wren could fully react, Dart swung the door open before…A loud slam.Wren jumped, startled by the noise. Victor just sighed, quietly groaning under his breath, “And there he goes again with those tantrums.”Wren would grip his sketchbooks close to him, tensing up, Victor on the other hand would just tell Wren calmly, “He’s like this often. I’ll check on him if it helps.” Victor would murmur before heading off towards Dart’s direction. He’d roll his eyes while making his way.And so Wren decided to wait for Dart and Victor to return. But those minutes, they felt like they stretched on and on. Thoughts were beginning to cloud his mind, like a storm forming, threatening to capsize the sailboat. What if he did something wrong?
Is that why Dart left?
Did he make Dart feel neglected and unloved?
Dart must hate the fact that Wren constantly talks about Marble, he probably thinks Wren doesn’t find him important!
Did Victor roll his eyes over Wren’s own incompetence?
Was Victor only giving him the opportunity out of pity?
He must’ve upset Victor a ton after not taking the business card the first time! This was all his fault wasn't it?He couldn’t bear it anymore, the chatter, the laughter, the music, the lights and now the thoughts? It was all too much. He had to leave. Stumbling out of the party he’d take a deep breath of fresh air. The dizzying feeling grabbed hold of his mind as he slowly made his way down the road. Walking along for a minute or so had he actually come to notice how dark it had gotten already, though thankfully he’d been prepared, he had his map app open to assist him.The silence from the night felt so deafening. Wren was never a major fan of the darkness, not necessarily fearful of it, but it never really brought him much comfort. It had always been too eerie for his tastes. Then again, noises in the dark? No thanks.Keeping himself company, he’d turn up the music in his earphones, putting on one of his favourite tracks to soothe himself as he slowly but surely made his way back home.Creaking open the front door, he was slightly surprised to find the lights off. Could it have been that late? Aren is usually up at times like this. Perhaps today’s been exhausting for him. Or perhaps Aren is actively avoiding Wren today…A little box was left on the dining table, probably just some leftovers Aren saved for Wren if he got hungry, nothing special. But what really caught Wren’s eye were the papers. They didn’t look like the sheets Aren was grading. Just some basic informal message left for Wren.“Don’t know when you’ll get back but I’ve got a couple of things to say to you.” Was what the message began with making Wren’s heart sink. Though he continued reading on.“First, the food in the box is if you feel hungry after the party, if you don’t plan to eat it today, please store it in the fridge, you may reheat it afterwards when needed. Everything else is in the fridge if you wish to add to the meal.” Classic Aren, underestimating people as if he’s so much better and knowledgeable on everything.“Secondly, please be careful when spending time outside at parties, especially late at night. Make sure you keep an eye on your belongings, be cautious of suspicious offers even from friends unless you are certain you trust them.” Not anything Aren hasn’t said before. Basic safety, Wren knew this.“Lastly, serious emphasis on this. Be careful around Victor. I don’t wish to have to boss you around but you should understand by now the risk you are taking when it comes to Victor. I need not reiterate.”That’s when Wren realised.
Wait a minute, THAT Victor?
Was that the same Victor that…
There’s no way.
He’s actually helpful, actually kind, actually friendly, unlike how Aren describes him.
That really sent his mind spinning. Struggling to comprehend, feeling like he was standing amidst fog. While trying to make sense of it all Wren would click open the box, taking a peek. Pancakes. Now he felt kind of bad. Maybe Aren did care?Though that didn’t distract him for long as his mind began spinning with questions about Victor again. He quickly flipped through the rest of the papers in hopes he’d Aren left more details for him. The rest of the pages appeared to be mostly random, one of them being an infographic on the symptoms of rage rot and mind crunch along with prevention methods, another page was some notes regarding Wren’s comic!?Aren read his work in progress comic?
Wren quickly skimmed through Aren’s paragraphs of feedback. Some things stood out, Aren’s mention and questions about Wren’s comic theme, asking how characters as a whole serve the story’s messaging, critique on character motivations being outright exposited instead of shown to the reader, only to end off with a tiny note at the bottom reminding Wren to clean up his room next time. That’s when Wren’s annoyance kicked in again. He didn’t even bother to write a response note to Aren, he was done for the day. Leaving everything including his sketchbooks on the table almost out of spite, he’d drag himself to his bedroom. Can’t he just be kind about Wren’s work? For once? Anything but this negativity?
He knows Wren is sensitive.
He’s known for years.
But he never ever changes.Laying on his bed now as he cuddled his comfort plush toy close to his chest, Aren really knows how to worsen a bad day. Wren could hear the notifications going off from his phone, most likely from Dart. But the exhaustion was taking hold. Muting his phone for once, Wren stared up at the ceiling, watching his room light dim.Was it really that wrong to want to feel loved?
Chapter 4: Splattered Thought Process
Wren awoke to his phone’s slight buzz, he assumed it was just some spam messages yet a flicker of hope was still there. As he squinted, the light of the phone screen pretty much beaming into his eyes, his eyes widened. Rubbing his eyes as if to check whether he’s really awake. Yes, Marble had contacted him directly. And not just some simple greeting, an actual promise to hangout through listing his free days!It felt so out of the blue but of course, who was he to complain. Joyously he hopped out of bed despite how he didn’t get as much sleep as he hoped. Immediately he asked Marble whether the two could hang out today. He knew it was quite the short notice hence was already preparing for rejection. But to his surprise, Marble agreed!Gleefully he asks about the time and whether they could spend time together at his place, just like they used to. And then he waited, though right as the anticipation was at its peak, Marble went offline.
Wren felt his heart sink. He should’ve expected this, Marble wasn’t really going to hang out with him, he’s only trying to get those hopes up. Who would want to spend time with him anyway?
He should’ve known better.A polite yet loud knock on the door could be heard breaking Wren free from his little spiral. Had Marble decided to come early? To surprise Wren? But he mustn't be too excited again yet. This could just be some cruel trick.Hesitantly he would hurry his way towards the front door before opening it, coming face to face with Dart once again. He didn’t want to admit it, but of course there was a tinge of disappointment.Dart looked a bit sorrowful almost, head lowered, hands wrapped around himself.“Wren, um hey again.”Wren would try to muster up some cheer, hoping Dart wouldn’t pick up on the fact he was expecting Marble, not necessarily him. “Oh hey, what’s up?”“I would just like to apologise. The door slamming at the party. That was really immature of me! I didn’t mean to leave you alone at that party, but still I’m sorry.” Dart looked Wren in the eyes, his mask displaying as if he was about to tear up.Wren wasn’t even thinking about what happened last night, it all felt more like a blur so he didn’t fully understand why Dart felt so awfully guilty over that. But regardless he tried to reassure and comfort. “You didn’t mean that, it’s okay! You don’t have to say sorry.”Dart’s mask would flicker for a second before switching to a joyous expression. “You’re such a kind friend, Wren! I don’t know what I did to deserve you!” Before leaning in to hug Wren.Wren hesitated slightly, only to hug back. If it makes Dart feel better, he didn’t see the harm.“I did find some plush toys that honestly reminded me of you. I saw them and went, oh Wren would love these no doubt!” Dart would rub Wren’s back slightly before pulling back and taking his phone out to show photos he took. “Look! Aren’t they adorable?”Wren looked at the pictures of soft toys Dart had taken. Dart wasn’t lying, he felt almost immediately attached to those sweet plushies. Did he really need another though? Aren had already complained quite a lot about Wren’s spending habits when it came to those.“Aww these are adorable!” Wren would lean in to take closer looks. “I wish I could get them.”“Wait, you can’t?” Dart appeared puzzled,“Money. Plus Aren’s not a fan of me having too many anyway.” Wren looked away, feeling slight embarrassment almost.“You’re a grown adult, he shouldn’t dictate and control your life like that! Like come on, you deserve freedom too.”“That’s what I’m saying! He’s so overbearing sometimes.” He was finally being understood!“Like Aren needs to chill.” Dart would chuckle. “Maybe I should buy him one of those new fans.”Dart would pause as if recalling the topic. “Oh right! If you can’t buy the plush, I’ll give one to you. Aren can’t complain if it’s a gift!”“Really? Wait I’d feel bad though, you don’t have to pay for me!”“I want to.” He chuckles once more. “Though I will keep which one I’m buying a secret! You just gotta wait and find out, hehe!”“Aww Dart, you really don’t have to, haha…”Dart simply giggled. “I just wanted to show appreciation. That’s all!”Wren nods, smiling before checking his phone. Marble had messaged back and was heading over now. Dart would peek over Wren’s shoulder, “Oh Marble’s coming?”“Yeah, we wanted to hangout today!” Wren would blurt out.“Can I join?”Wren hesitated, Dart followed up with, “It’s okay if I’m not allowed! I can do other things too. I just wanted to ask, since I was bored and wanted to spend time with my friend! Aka you!”Wren responded with a simple, “We can ask Marble when he gets here.”“Cool with me.” Dart laid down on Wren’s couch, clearly already making himself home.“Yeah, I don’t know when he’ll get here though.” Wren murmured under his breath, hoping Dart wouldn’t mind the wait.”Got any snacks?” Dart would ask.”Oh of course! Mainly got marshmallows, some gummies, chocolate…” He trailed off while trying to visualise the snacks he stored in the kitchen. “Some cookies too I suppose.””Can I get—“ Though before Dart could finish. A gentle knock.“Marble!” Wren would call out before rushing towards the door, seemingly completely forgetting about the plan of not getting expectations high.Swinging the door open swiftly, Wren came face to face with him again. Marble Meadows, his very first and only childhood bestie. Yet something about him was different, could Wren even describe it as slightly off or is that way too judgemental?
It wasn’t wrong, just something he wasn’t quite used to when it came to Marble.
No, it wasn’t just appearance. It was like his essence was significantly different to the friend he knew way back.”Hey, Wren? It’s been a while, glad we could catch up again though!” Marble would smile, warmth radiating almost.Wren seemed to snap out of it, maybe he’s just misunderstanding Marble again. He was the type to struggle with things like this anyway.“Uh hey! Yeah! Me too, I really missed you!” Wren would fumble slightly with his words. Did that sound ingenuine? He meant it but from Marble’s glance away, maybe it sounded too rehearsed? Yes, Wren had tried to prepare for this moment, but it doesn’t take from the real feelings right?Dart would let out a cough, clearly one on purpose to grab attention. “Are you gonna ask him?” He’d ask.“Oh right! Almost forgot.” Wren would then gesture towards Dart. “Marble, this is my friend I met online, he goes by Dart! And he just wanted to join us on our hang out today or something.”“If that’s okay with you that is!” Dart would grin as he did a playful finger gun towards Marble.Marble stood there, his expression almost blank. Unreadable.
Was he conflicted? Was this just some awful idea?
Wren didn’t want to upset Dart, but he didn’t want to upset Marble either!
Maybe Marble is just thinking.
Maybe Marble just needs to get to know Dart first.
Maybe Marble just struggles with portraying how he felt!
He really needs to stop assuming the worst…“Hey Marble, has your hueman core drifted off? If not, we’d appreciate a response!” Dart had gotten right in front of Marble, almost examining him with curiosity.”Ahaha, sorry about him. He’s just kinda like that sometimes. But we’re both okay if you would want to keep it to just you and me!” Wren would tilt his head slightly, though he couldn’t lie, he really hoped Marble would respond soon since it was already getting a bit tense.Marble eyed Dart then glancing back at Wren. Wren felt like he could sense an underlying unspoken disapproval. “All good, I don’t mind him joining.”“Yes!” Dart would cheer. But once again, Wren seemed to still feel that lingering tension in the air. Was Marble just lying to make him and Dart feel better? Or was he reading too much into it.“It‘s really okay if you don’t want to! We aren‘t forcing you, Marble.”“I’m fine, genuinely. I appreciate getting to know new friends anyway.”Wren nods. But that comment about new friends? That felt like feeding an already growing pest of doubt within the mind. The growing worry of being inevitably replaced. Was it even irrational to fear that?It grew quiet for a bit, Wren‘s thoughts picked up in speed, circling and threatening to swarm him.“So, what’s the plan you have for us today?” Marble would gently prompt.“We could draw, and make characters.” Wren would respond almost instinctively, yet the sickening hum of his internal voice seemed to speak over him. “I‘ll grab the materials or something.“Making his way towards the storage closet, he couldn’t help but feel like he was being monitored. Like they were all waiting for him to slip up. He pulled the door, it was dim yet sent him a slight wave of relaxation. Those childhood albums, filled with family pictures and friend photos. A whole album dedicated to his times with Marble too, perhaps he should really check back on it sometime. He would reposition some of them, shoving the family and school ones deeper into the shelves but placing the friendship albums in closer reach.A quick sorting and he already seemed to have forgotten why he came here. Right, the art supplies. Reaching for the markers, pencils and paper, stacking it on each other hoping it won‘t topple.“You‘re a strong one.” Dart would remark while standing by the doorway, though Wren was unsure whether that was just a joke or a genuine compliment. “I can help though.”Wren really hoped he didn’t take too long but nodded, he appreciated the help. The two would make their way back to the main table, Wren gently placing his load on the table, Dart following along.Marble would place his phone back in his pocket, pick out some colours and a sheet of paper. ”Just so you know, I can‘t really stay for dinner today and may need to leave early. Hope that’s alright to you.“Disappointment crawled up Wren‘s cheeks, but he tried to suppress it, he should just be grateful. “That‘s all fine with me.”Dart would casually grab a seat, staring at the paper for some time before taking a pencil to sketch.Caught up in his thoughts though he sat down as well to begin his doodles. Occasionally he found himself curious, peeking over at the others’ progress. Marble was already making neat guidelines and looking up reference pictures alongside this. Dart on the other hand was quite quick with his work, yet it didn‘t even look rushed. And Wren? Still staring at the page, hoping no one was watching his art process, though still hesitant he managed to start. Making sure that his eraser was close by, he knew he was one to make many mistakes. While they all separately drew, Dart would try to spark up conversation. “So like, how‘d you both meet?”Marble seemed fixated on the art and unresponsive to Dart’s question. Perhaps he didn‘t catch it. Which led to Dart asking again.“Um,” Wren would think back. “My parents moved here and we met in the same neighbourhood. But sorta only got close after our days at school.”“Mhm, Wren was the one to approach me first. I really wasn’t a talkative kid back then.” Marble added on.“Yeah! That reminds me! I was bossy back then, annoying too. I don’t know how anyone could stand me back then…”“Don‘t be so harsh on yourself, we were just kids back then.” Marble reassured him.“Like Marble said, and also bet you weren‘t that bad.” Dart chuckled, adding finishing touches to his piece. “So, yeah. I finished drawing the character, y‘all done yet?”Wren looks up at Dart, baffled. “You’re quick.”“I‘ve always been speedy with tasks. Hence why boredom catches up easily.““Oh.”“Yeah, I mean it makes sense.” Dart would mutter, tapping a pencil against his mask and beginning a new drawing. “Marble‘s not even finished with the sketch?”“He uses lots of references! Plus taking your time isn‘t a bad thing. Everyone works at their own pace.” Wren would rush to defend. Yet if only he could tell this to himself when he drew.“Yeah I know, just mentioning.” Dart would brush it off. “Forget I even said that earlier, didn’t know it came off rude.”The conversation went quiet, Wren redirected his attention to the art. Keeping his thoughts at bay. When they all completed their piece, the three agreed to reveal it on a countdown.“Three, two and one… Show!”They all flipped their papers around to show each other, Wren however, one second late.Dart‘s mask immediately flipped to a surprised face, clapping excitedly. “That guy looks so evil! Like just look at that grin.”“Well he is!” Wren chuckles.“You sure know how to portray characters through design, Wren. It‘s like you’re some hidden master.”“Aww, I‘m flattered!”“Do tell me more. Y’know about that guy.”“Maybe we could take turns sharing our creations?” Marble chimed in.“Right yeah. Turn taking like school. Okay whatever, sure.” A groan from Dart.
Chapter 5: Emerging Patterns
“I can go first, then Wren and lastly Marble can show.” Dart would say as he pushed his 2 drawings to the centre of the table for the two to see clearly.Marble looks over at Wren in silence. “He’s like that sometimes…” Wren whispered back to Marble. He had a feeling Marble wasn’t a big fan of Dart, perhaps it was some form of jealousy? He wouldn’t blame Marble if it was, after all he could relate, a bit too much.
And yet, Wren was hoping that if Marble just knew Dart long enough, perhaps those two could get along too. And they’d be a big happy trio! Wren wouldn’t have to rot in loneliness when one of them’s busy because he’d have a second option…But that’s an incredibly selfish way to think of friendships! They shouldn’t have to serve him, they have their lives, their interests, and it’s not all about Wren. A greedy self absorbed hypocrite! No wonder everyone probably secretly hates him. He can’t even like himself!”So like Wren, what’d you think?” Dart would tap on his shoulder, Wren flinched from it but less significantly this time.Wren realised, he had completely stopped listening yet again just because of his self indulgent self pity. He was just proving his own harsh critiques right. Dart must see him as inconsiderate. How come he can’t even give some time to his friends without assuming the worst. They probably don’t hate him, but with the way he acts, they might as well. If he found himself insufferable, why wouldn’t anyone else?“Wren, is something wrong?” Marble would ask. It seems they were both catching on now.“Sorry, I zoned out a bit. Can you say that again, Dart?””Oh.” Dart’s mask powered off.”Uhm… You don’t have to! I’m really sorry. I just got caught up in my head and—”“It’s alright, I guess. I’ll explain again.” Dart muttered under his breath. He was obviously upset at Wren. Why did he have to mess up, he should’ve paid attention!Dart would point at the drawings again, going about his process and ideas for his characters. He had drawn two, one being a mysterious, lanky figure in a space themed lab coat holding a shimmering box in one hand, and the other looking like a literal recolour of Dart himself, with Wren’s colours. Odd choice but Wren shouldn’t judge.“Lab coat guy goes by The Voided One, or something. Kinda unoriginal but it’s whatever. They are feared by the world for good reason.”“I think it’s intriguing, creativity doesn’t have to tie to originality—” Marble was cut off.“Yeah I know...” Dart’s mask was still off. “Okay that other character, that’s Daren. He’s just some guy. He’s an insecure, sad lil guy, morally grey and feels bad about his past mistakes. But he has a darker side to him, one that he is in denial about. I don’t know if that even makes sense, but that’s Daren I guess.” Dart would lower his head.“He looks like you.” Marble would clearly point out only for Dart to go silent.Wren couldn’t help but feel a bit, targeted? That Daren character could probably just be some projection of Dart’s own struggles and fears. But Wren couldn’t help but relate it back to himself. It felt like some jab at him, is this how Dart sees him? Perhaps he was overthinking again. It just felt incredibly weird. Or maybe it’s all some coincidence. Maybe Dart just wanted to make that without any specific reason or meaning behind it! Wren should just let him have fun without overanalysing.“But uh, these are actually so cool!” Wren would comment. “I really like the traits you gave them!”“You’re only saying that to make me feel better.”“Sorry.” The atmosphere felt so suffocating once more.“Wren, would you like to share your character next?” Marble would suggest, hoping to lift spirits up.“Oh okay,” He took a deep breath in, slowly easing into talking about the character he created. “So this character I made is going to be named Python. Half monster, half man. Python is a wandering traveller. He is an evil yet without a doubt genius manipulator. He is the type to despise casual talks and craves depth. He has been deeply hurt in the past by close ones and lashes out, harming those around him out of spite.”“And how does he manipulate?” Dart’s mask was turned on again, looking in Wren’s general direction. “Like yeah he’s a manipulator, but in what way? Like how does that manifest?”“Well um…” That question seemed to stress him a bit. Aren often asked questions like that to trip him up, poke holes in his plot and to bash him with more criticism. “Python lies a lot, threatens when things don’t go his way, makes his internal issues everyone’s problem and deliberately twists narratives to obtain goals. He makes himself seem like the most important guy in the room.”“Do give an example, cause right now you’re just telling us what he does, not showing how he goes about it.” Dart would further nudge. “I’m just curious when it comes to more psychological elements and how fiction authors tackle them. I’m not here to judge, in case you’re worried.”He glanced at Marble who seemed ever slightly worried for him, Wren nodded as to show Marble that all was fine.“Okay okay, once Python destroyed the main character’s trophies and prized possessions from loved ones, smashed them into pieces. He then blames it on the main character, saying how they made him do this by angering him and that it could’ve been prevented if they didn’t betray him those years ago and ruined his life.”Dart leaned in. “That guy is brutal! What a monster, though it’s definitely got me wondering about his inner workings. Cause like why would he do all that? What does he gain apart from letting out that anger!”Dart was actually asking Wren questions about his characters. Engaging with the story, not just dismissing it like Marble and not just asking to point out flaws like Aren. He was interested, something Wren was positively surprised about.“Actually, I quite like him and the backstory is relatable. He intrigues me. I genuinely love messed up characters like these, and I absolutely dig the design by the way.” Dart’s mask now a beaming grin. “Like there’s so much you can explore with what led Python down that path.”“I agree, I think he’s a cool character too, lots of potential, definitely lots of ways to go about him and his concept. Can’t wait to see how you further develop him.” Marble would add on. “Keep it up!”The two then turned their attention to Marble awaiting his turn to share. “The character I created goes by the name Engel. Have yet to figure out as much story for them yet, however I did have reasoning behind design choices.”“The dress gives them an ethereal nature emphasising how out of the world and untouchable they appear when compared to others. The hair styled and tied like this hints at Engel’s desire to organise and keep things neatly tidied especially during the chaotic disarray of the environment they currently inhabit. Their hair is a naturally coloured brown which symbolises their connection to the grounded core of the world, Engel is down to earth and in touch with nature.” Marble would then finish. “There’s still other details I could add, however that’s the main idea.”The front door opened with Catey rushing in after a day from school. She was munching on some candy while turning on the television. Behind her was Aren who was already glaring directly at Dart.“Oh uh… Sorry for not asking you before I invited people in!” Wren would mutter under his breath before heading out with Marble and Dart hoping to find somewhere else to hang out. “I’ll try to remember next time…”“Remember to also clean up your mess before leaving next time.” Wren would receive that text from Aren right after he left the house.“He’s so controlling. Like this is your house too, not just his!” Dart would complain. “Who does he think he is, bossing you around like that?”“To be fair, I should’ve asked first. I can do things on impulse sometimes.”“But still he doesn’t have to be such a cold jerk over that. You get what I mean? Like forcing your brother’s friends out the house? Not great if you ask me!”Wren nods while searching for places to stay temporarily for the day. “We could always head over to that new cafe nearby. I’ve been wanting to try it but never got the chance to.” Marble would suggest.“Or we could go to an amusement park! Spend time there and cheer up!” Dart would bring up.“I’d love to but I simply don’t have enough time for that today, unfortunately. And the nearest amusement park isn’t walking distance.”“Oh.”The group settled for a trip to the cafe, despite Dart’s initial disagreement with Marble leading the way. When they arrived, they were assigned a private room which tends to be reserved for bigger groups or events. Marble seemed accustomed to this, though Wren was clearly a bit surprised that such rooms even existed.“Had to pay slightly extra for this but it’s kind of necessary.” Marble mentioned.“Why?” Dart asked.“Let’s say, having certain people intrude on my private life isn’t ideal.” He would pick up the menus and pass them around. “And I’m not sure you’d want to have cameras poked at you either while trying to have a casual meal with friends. Unless you do.”“Seems fun.” Dart joked.“Agree to disagree.”
Chapter 6: Comparing Contrast Levels
Marble would briefly look at the menu, eyeing what he wanted to order on the spot.“So Wren,” He looked over at him, “Any projects you‘ve been up to lately?”Wren chuckled nervously, he hadn’t been doing much, mainly procrastinating all too much during recent times. Though he couldn’t just leave Marble with nothing.“I was working on my little character centered comic, but kind of put it on hold so far. I will definitely get back into it soon! I mean I hope…”Marble tilted his head, “And what’s the story about?”“It’s just,” Wren thinks about how to word himself without spilling too much, “a story about the main protagonist who aims to defeat a villain, however gets surprised by the villain when he actually appears. The villain is Python, that evil monster man I mentioned! And because the protagonist sees Python based on surface impression initially, they compare him to the myths that were told. Which leads to confusion.”Marble nods, taking in the information.“It’s a bit cliché, I know—“”Hey, give yourself some credit man.” Dart pat Wren on the shoulder. “I think it’s awesome actually.”“It’s a bit overdone to me,” Wren would murmur.”We agree though, don’t sell yourself short. Even if you don’t think so, your story is worth telling!” Marble reassured him.”Aww thanks,” A soft smile across Wren’s face, “Don’t know where I’d be without you.”Dart cleared his throat, those digital eyes looking tired. Wren glances at him, waiting to see what he’d say next, no response. Perhaps he’s just sick today.“Do you have a name for the protagonist yet?” Marble would ask further.“Well not yet! But I have a couple ideas—” Wren would attempt to continue though was interrupted.“Can I be honest with you?” Dart’s voice, soft spoken now.“Oh, of course!” Wren would be lying if he dared claim his stress didn’t spike up from that.“Not gonna lie, you act really head over heels for Marble, man.”“Ahaha,” He’d laugh it off. “Jealous? This quickly? Don’t worry, you don’t gotta lie. We all have those moments!” Wren, clearly trying to make light and deflect, though that momentary grasp of power he felt he held was shattered.“Talk about jumping to conclusions.” Marble would say.Wren nods slightly, “Right, maybe I went a bit far. Sorry.”“Maybe? Wren, you gotta actually face the facts, bud.” Dart would begin, “This clearly isn’t a friendship, you’re obsessed with him and it’s plain as day. I’m just saying because from what I observed, you’re being way too attached to the point of toxicity and bringing harm to yourself.”Marble went silent, though discomfort was very present in his eyes.“I just want to help and sometimes that means calling out the harsh truth.” Dart would let out a sigh.Wren’s eye twitched, he felt frozen in place before finally managing to lower his head in shame. This wasn’t even some universal crime. Yet he couldn’t help but feel awful, like he committed a sin. This was just one of the many bullet points engraved in stone, collected as pure evidence to his failure at being a good friend. Yet slightly, he couldn’t help but feel some distaste and annoyance. Trembling, he didn’t even know why, yet he doubled down.“And who are you to decide?” Wren would say, unaware of his voice raising. “I’ve known Marble for longer than you have and I can safely say that this is none of your business. If you’re just here to control my friendships, then stop! Forcing yourself into other’s lives isn’t the way to go. It just makes you seem annoying.”“You’re getting defensive, even when I’m carefully explaining this to you because you matter to me? Because I care for you?” Dart’s voice wavered, “But okay, I see how it is and I understand. I just didn’t know you saw me that way.”The waiter, who was now standing by Marble, “What would you all like to order?” Breaking the intensity of the conversation at hand.“Mushroom soup, please.” Marble would point at the menu.“And the two of you? What can I get you?”“Hot chocolate with marshmallows, maybe. Also some doughnuts?”Dart tapped his finger on his mask. “A soft drink, but surprise me.”The waiter takes in their requests, making their way out. The room now eerily quiet. But of course, silence didn’t linger for long with Dart around.”I really killed the vibe, huh? Whoops.” Dart let out a strained laugh. “Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not mad. But the things you said were quite accusatory and I did not mean to come off that way. Still, that really hurt.”“I’m really sorry. I really shouldn’t have said that to you. Truly sorry. I don’t know what came over me, but that was unnecessary and just cruel.”Dart’s mask, now a blank stare. Those moments of silence again, it always screamed louder than any noise would.“I’m sorry.” Wren repeated.”And I forgive you.”Frustration however bubbled under the surface. Dart was making this about himself. Wasn’t this supposed to be Wren and Marble’s reunion? There he was being mean, yet again, in his thinking.
So much for that apology.
And he wonders why he can’t change.“Still on your mind?” Dart leans forward. “I already said I forgive you, don’t dig yourself into guilt.”“You sure read people well.” Wren commented though that unease refused to leave.“A common thing I’ve been told.”The drinks, doughnuts and soup had arrived, Marble thanked the waiter and took a quick photo of his soup before actually taking his first taste. That was probably just for more social media content, to interact with his fans and encourage discussions on his daily life.Wren would take a sip from his hot chocolate, almost immediately burning his tongue. “That’s really hot!”Dart held in a laugh, clearly enjoying the double meaning. “You ordered hot chocolate. Of course it’s hot.”“Yeah… I know.”“And I know you know.”He couldn’t help but also chuckle. At least they were both obnoxious, not just Wren. He wasn’t the outcast for being weird, Dart was weird too. They click!Marble was hastily trying to finish his soup, though careful to not make messes. Wren’s question as to why, was answered with an urgent phone call that Marble had to pick up. Right away, mumbles from the other side. But with the responses from Marble, clearly painting a picture of a new scheduled event and he was already late. He apologised, promising it wouldn’t happen again. Then turning to Dart and Wren.”I’ve got to leave early, deep apologies. I’ll pay of course, but you may stay as long as you wish. Sorry it’s so sudden.”“It’s alright.” Wren blurted out. But was it really?Marble gave them a last wave before hurrying out. The two left staring at each other and the finished soup where Marble sat.“Busy bee isn’t he?”“Kinda expected.”“Sounds depressing, to grow to the point of expecting your bestie to leave and prioritise his job over you every waking moment. Like, kinda sad.”“I know, but can I blame him?”Dart didn’t respond. Instead he pulled the curtains aside and gazed out the window. Wren followed where he was eyeing. And there it was, in plain daylight.
Marble, speaking with someone else.He left them.
Just to speak with who knows, right by the window too?
Giggling, smiling, freely chatting.
Something he hadn’t given Wren in years.
Was this just some orchestrated getaway from Wren and Dart?Benefit of the doubt.
Don’t blame him.
He’s trying. But this was a recurring pattern. Was it not?
How much can Wren continue to take?
On their reunion too? For Marble to pull this yet again!
How little does he mean to Marble?“I’m so sorry,” Dart placed a gentle hand on Wren’s shaking shoulder, “You deserve better than this.”“Do I?”
Welded Bolted Soul
Continuous cranking of machinery, crackle of fire sparks and yet progress was slowing. This was a displeasing sight for the man. Scanning through scrolls of factory worker names, one stood out. Russell, covered up as if just some product out of order. Arley was no fan of searching, he wasn’t usually one to be curious and find out. Yet the loud roar of gears grinding suggested Russell’s presence was needed.Hastily Arley checked, corner to corner. Scattered crumpled blueprints crunching beneath his steps as he walked, the stench of dye and rusted metal filling his senses the more he descended the stair. Perhaps this was merely some crime scene awaiting discovery, Arley had read all about those, prepared for the worst he was. However as he descended down the last step. An announcement through the speakers, “Arley has entered the spare parts storage.” Though he continued on. He couldn’t help but wonder what had gotten into him, like a magnet drawn to the opposite pole he wandered through the room.A singular bulb flickered on as a wooden pinboard revealed itself for Arley. Eyes widening though he stood still. Papers documenting how production levels have drastically gone down and beside it? Diagrams on worker efficiency. Yet those illustrations were of mechanical beings. No human in sight? As dots began to bridge and connect, Arley recalled the brief mention of robotic replacements. Was this really what marked the end of his career? Russell had always been a firm believer of humanity lasting, so could it have been that he was taken away for this reason? These questions, one of the few Arley found himself asking.Arley’s moment simply shattered with a small tap on the shoulder by none other than Russell. Pleasantly surprised, Russell was still alive and well, Arley reached a hand towards him to make sure this was no dream. But as he did so, the sound of hinges paired with his stiff movement. Russell merely lifted Arley’s hand before looking him dead in the eyes.”Productivity above all, isn’t that right Arley?”
